Part Two of the Cultivate Sthira Series
If the previous article explored the six habits that weaken a yoga practice, this one offers the antidote. The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā, one of the foundational texts of Haṭha Yoga, doesn’t simply tell us what to avoid — it also describes six qualities that allow yoga to flourish. Although these teachings were written centuries ago, they remain remarkably relevant today. In a world of constant distraction, endless information and the expectation of instant results, these six principles remind us that yoga is not something we achieve in a single class. It is something we cultivate. Whether you’re stepping onto a yoga mat for the very first time or have been practising for years, these timeless teachings offer a practical guide to living with greater steadiness, resilience and purpose. At Sthira Yoga Academy in Mittagong, we often speak about yoga as something that extends beyond physical postures. These teachings remind us
that the real practice isn’t simply what happens during sixty minutes on the mat—it’s how we meet the other twenty-three hours of our day.
The Verse Success in yoga comes through enthusiasm, courage, patience, knowledge of truth, determination, and letting go of unsuitable company. — Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā 1.16
- Utsāha — Enthusiasm
Enthusiasm is not simply excitement. It is the willingness to keep returning. Roll out the mat anyway. Begin with the first breath. The desire often follows the action. Every practice becomes another vote for the person you are becoming.
- Sāhasa — Courage
Sometimes courage is walking into your first class. Sometimes it is asking a question. Sometimes it is choosing rest instead of pushing harder. Growth begins where certainty ends.
- Dhairya — Patience
Modern life encourages speed. Yoga encourages consistency. Strength, flexibility and
calm are cultivated over seasons, not sessions.
- Tattva-Jñāna — Knowledge of Truth
Yoga is more than movement. Philosophy encourages us to ask deeper questions and develop wisdom through experience.
- Niścaya — Determination
Motivation comes and goes. Determination asks us simply to return. Again and again. Small actions repeated consistently create profound transformation.
- Jana-Saṅga-Parityāga — Choosing Supportive Company
Our environment shapes our habits. A healthy yoga community encourages growth, kindness and practice.
Ancient Wisdom for Modern Life
These six qualities help us navigate work, relationships, uncertainty and change just as much as they help us practise yoga. At Sthira Yoga Academy we often say yoga is about becoming Stable • Steady • Strong—not because life becomes easier, but because we become better equipped to meet it.
